KEVIN HARVICK, NO. 29 RHEEM CHEVROLET – FINISHED SECOND
POST RACE TRANSCRIPT:

Kevin Harvick NASCAR KERRY THARP: Let’s get started in our post-race. We’ll roll right into the eighth annual Subway Fresh Fit 500 NASCAR Sprint Cup Series event here at Phoenix International Raceway, Race 2 of the 2012 season. Our race runner up at today’s eighth annual Subway Fresh Fit 500 is Kevin Harvick, and he drove the No. 29 Rheem Chevrolet for Richard Childress Racing. Second place finish today and Kevin is third in points, eight out of the first place points leader. Kevin, talk about I know you said there on pit road that you were proud of your team for gutting it out here today even though you ran just a little bit shy of Sunoco there at the end.

KEVIN HARVICK: Yeah, when you come out of caution they tell you you’re nine laps short, you really don’t think there’s any possibility to make it. But a couple cautions and a little bit of saving and a little bit tighter crunch on the numbers, we wound up about a lap short.
But those are the types of things you’ve got to do to take the chances, and when you’re close enough to at least coast around, they did a good job. So we came here and struggled at the last race here and ran 25th, 30th all day and came back and raced for a win today. So they’ve done a good job over the winter, and hopefully that continues over the next few weeks in the preparation that they’ve done through the winter.

Three-Time Champion Finishes Disappointing 22nd At Phoenix

Tony Stewart NASCARTony Stewart saw a potential top-10 result disappear when a freak mid-race engine issue caused him to lose two laps and finish a disappointing 22nd in the Subway Fresh Fit 500k NASCAR Sprint Cup Series race Sunday at Phoenix International Raceway.

The trouble began for Stewart on lap 248 when a caution period started. Crew chief Steve Addington told Stewart to conserve fuel in his No. 14 Office Depot/Mobil 1 Chevrolet Impala for Stewart-Haas Racing (SHR) to hopefully complete the 312-lap distance without another pit stop.

Stewart, who has been a master at fuel-saving strategy under cautions throughout his career, shut off his engine as he has done many times in the past. By shutting off the engine, drivers can coast around the track without using fuel and then fire up the engine when it is required to get moving under power again.

KEVIN HARVICK, NO. 29 RHEEM CHEVROLET – FINISHED 2ND: YOU HAD TO SAVE A WHOLE LOT OF FUEL AND THEN GO AFTER DENNY HAMLIN (WINNER) IN THE END. WHAT DID YOU LEARN TODAY? I HAVE A FEELING THERE’S A BIG PICTURE IN THIS “Well, just to finish second racing for a win at a place we ran 25th or 30th or whatever we ran here last year; I was really nervous coming here about how we were going to run. I just want to thank everybody with Rheem, Jimmy Johns, Budweiser, and Chevrolet; everybody that helps keep this car on the race track; and all these guys. You cut the fuel mileage that close, you’re figuring it right. So I’m proud of all my guys. When they come to a place like this where we struggled so much, and then race for a win, is hopefully what sets the tone for the year.”

HOW TOUGH IS IT TO RACE SOMEBODY AND SAVE FUEL?
“They told me were nine laps short when we came back out and the cautions got us to within five, and we were able to save a little and they figured it a little bit close on those numbers. But I’m so proud of these guys. When you figure fuel mileage like that, that’s the chances and the things you’ve got to do to race for championships. I know we didn’t win the race today but we came here and struggled here last year at this particular race. And to come here and race for a win and make a total 180 was great.”

TONY STEWART, NO. 14 OFFICE DEPOT/MOBIL 1 CHEVROLET – QUALIFIED 2ND:

Tony Stewart NASCARYOU’RE THE LAST ONE TO GO OUT THERE AND YOU TAGGED A GOOD NUMBER ON THE BOARD. BUT TALK ABOUT HOW YOU THINK THINGS ARE GOING FOR YOU THIS WEEKEND
“I’m really excited, actually. It’s what I would truly consider our first real weekend with Steve Addington as crew chief. Daytona is always kind of a different deal, but this is where you first really get to start working on the handling of your car with your crew chief. So I’m really, really proud of what he did yesterday and today. And we actually got a little bit tight in our run so you know, off of what everybody else was doing and how loose it sounded like the track was, we made a pretty big adjustment there and he got to the opposite side of it, which I’m pretty excited that he was able to do that. So, it still translated into a great lap and I’m not sure; I think we could have been close to Mark (Martin, pole-winner), but I don’t know if he got to run his second lap if he would have picked-up more and got away from us even more there. So he definitely put up a stat-lap for sure.”

DO YOU FEEL LIKE YOU PICKED-UP WHERE YOU LEFT-OFF AT THE END OF LAST YEAR AT THIS POINT?
“I’d like to say we are. I mean I honestly think it’s a little early to tell. I think this is what feels like really the first weekend of the year for us in all reality. Daytona is always different and always special; but this weekend is kind of the real start to the season as far as just getting back in the swing of things. But, I’d say hopefully after Vegas, we’ll have a little better idea of that. Normally if we qualify well, we normally have a decent shot at running well in the race. So I’m hoping that what we did today will transfer to tomorrow.”

Ricky Stenhouse NASCARRICKY STENHOUSE JR., No. 6 Roush Fenway Racing Ford Mustang (Finished 3rd) – WHAT MORE DID YOU NEED THERE AT THE FINISH? “I think we had the fast race car there at the end. We just couldn’t go on restarts. We couldn’t get the grip and tires we needed the first lap or two and that gave up a lot of track position. We bounced back, fought hard and got a third place finish out of it. Not too bad for how far we fell back a few times. I just want to thank all the fans for coming out here. We really appreciate it and glad we could put on a show for you.”

TREVOR BAYNE, No. 60 Ford EcoBoost Ford Mustang (Finished 7th) – “I thought we were going to get a really good run after that first start. We drove right to the lead and it was a stout car. The problem was we were too good on the short runs and it faded on the long run. We got too tight. It is unfortunate. I wanted to win this thing and I thought we had a shot at it all weekend but we just need to be better on the long run. Last time we were too good on the long run and everything was short. It is a gamble if you are going to hit it or not. We did our target, we got it good on the short run which was our goal, now we just have to find that middle balance so we can win one of these things again.”

Jeff Gordon NASCARHOW IS THE TRACK DIFFERENT FROM WHEN YOU WON HERE AND WHAT ARE YOUR THOUGHTS AS YOU DEFEND YOUR RACE WIN? “It was bittersweet to be out there on that backhoe. Knowing that we had just won the race, I didn’t want to see any changes happen to the race track, but at the same time I was excited for PIR (Phoenix International Raceway) and what they were going to be doing here. Obviously, they’ve built something that is very cool. Anytime a new pavement gets laid down on a track you go through some tricky times with tires and getting the surface worn in. It came in really nicely at the end of the race last year and already you can see what a difference that period of time and the amount of laps that has been put on the track. I’m really looking forward to a good race this weekend. We made some mistakes the last time we were here and had some brake issues and dealt with some things that really took us out of contention. We’re pretty excited about being back here. We feel like this is a good track for us and hopefully the things we learned are going to be beneficial this time around.”

WERE YOU BEING SERIOUS OR WERE YOU JOKING ABOUT HAVING A PHONE WITH YOU WHEN YOU WERE FLIPPING IN THE SHOOTOUT? “You know me, I’m never one to be a smart alec. I was being somewhat serious and joking at the same time I guess. I think that the social media aspect of it I thought was great for the sport, great for Brad (Keselowski) and from that side of it; I think that it’s awesome that NASCAR is really being that lenient. I think that the technology of phones these days is growing rapidly that there could be some things that NASCAR might need to pay attention to that might need to keep the phones out of the car.”
