Sato’s win makes headlines in Japan: Takuma Sato’s victory in the Toyota Grand Prix of Long Beach was big news internationally, especially in his homeland to start the work week.

NHK, Japan’s largest TV Network, devoted a long segment early in its national news broadcast to the first Japanese winner of an Indy car race. He was the main story on Yahoo Japan and on the front page of all the major Tokyo newspapers (a first for IndyCar racing since Danica Patrick won at Twin Ring Motegi in 2008). “Likes” and Facebook comments on the main indycar.com story showed a ten-fold increase.

“We all did banzai (traditional Japanese exclamation meaning long life) when ‘Taku’ received (the) checker(ed) flag,” relayed GAORA Sports TV director Keiichi Inamine, whose network broadcast the early-morning (in Japan) race. “We took photo with all members in our studio.”

Following a visit April 22 to Honda Performance Development in Santa Clarita, Calif., by Honda team drivers, Sato returned to Tokyo for what was to be a brief vacation before the May 4-5 Itaipava Sao Paulo Indy 300 presented by Nestle in Brazil. Those plans certainly will be altered as Japan’s most-famous race car driver and now a national hero will be inundated with media requests.

SATO CLAIMS FIRST INDY CAR WIN ON STREETS OF LONG BEACH

LONG BEACH, Calif. (Sunday, April 21, 2013) – Takuma Sato became the first driver from Japan to win an Indy car race, prevailing in the 39th Toyota Grand Prix of Long Beach.

Sato, who started fourth in the 80-lap race on the 1.968-mile, 11-turn street circuit, provided A.J. Foyt Racing its first victory since July 7, 2002, at Kansas Speedway with Airton Dare behind the wheel. The last win for the team on a road/street course was by A.J. Foyt on Oct. 1, 1978, at Silverstone. Overall, A.J. Foyt Racing has 44th victories.

“Takuma made it look too easy,” team director and race strategist Larry Foyt said. “It made me so nervous watching it out there. He just drove a flawless race.”

ST. PETERSBURG, Fla. (Friday, March 22, 2013) – That Will Power and Ryan Hunter-Reay were at the top of the time chart on the opening day of preparations for the Honda Grand Prix of St. Petersburg wasn’t a surprise. After all, they dueled for the IZOD IndyCar Series title in 2012.

The driver who ranked third, Simona de Silvestro, was a bit of a surprise – a pleasant one to the first-year KV Racing Technology driver.

Power, who has earned the pole at St. Petersburg the past three years, led 25 drivers with a best lap of 1 minute, 1.4467 seconds, while Hunter-Reay, the reigning IZOD IndyCar Series champion, checked in second at 1:01.6252.

Today’s IZOD IndyCar Series, Firestone Indy Lights and Mazda Road to Indy headlines:

1. Winning titles nothing new for Panther Racing’s NFL connection

2. Juncos Racing hoping to build program with Serenelli

3. Texas teen Toppe set to race in USF2000

1. Winning titles nothing new for Panther Racing’s NFL connection: Jim Harbaugh may be in search of his first NFL championship, but the San Francisco 49ers coach has already won three INDYCAR championships as co-owner of Panther Racing.

Panther Racing won the IZOD IndyCar Series titles with Sam Hornish Jr. in 2001 and 2002 and the Firestone Indy Lights title in 2003 with Mark Taylor. All three title-winning cars carried the No. 4, the same number Harbaugh wore when he was quarterback of the Indianapolis Colts.

“Jim has always been a tremendous leader and I’ve said several times he’s the ultimate warrior,” Panther Racing team managing partner John Barnes said. “I can’t think of another family that deserves this honor as much as the Harbaughs – Jim, John and (father) Jack have all been big mentors of mine for a long time.
