THREE HEAT RACES WITH TRANSFER POSITIONS, POINTS HIGHLIGHT

IOWA CORN INDY 250 QUALIFYING

INDIANAPOLIS (Monday, Jan. 21, 2013) – Three 50-lap heat races, including transfers to Race 3 for the top-two finishers in the first two qualifying races, will determine the starting grid for the seventh Iowa Corn Indy 250 on Sunday, June 23, at Iowa Speedway in Newton, Iowa.

The format for heat race qualifications on Saturday, June 22, also will reward 12 starters with points – from nine points for the pole winner and descending by one point each position to one point for 11th and 12th. Other IZOD IndyCar Series events, outside of the Indianapolis 500 with its own points framework, pay one point to the pole winner.

Three heat races of 30 laps each replaced single-car qualifications for the Iowa event in 2012. Race 3 consisted of drivers ranked one through eight by combined practice times and race results determined the first four rows. Dario Franchitti earned the pole position and Ryan Hunter-Reay, who went on to win the IZOD IndyCar Series championship, won the race from the seventh starting position. Read Full Article →

1. INDYCAR stars meet. MLS Draft Hopefuls in asphalt friendly: The Indianapolis Motor Speedway has hosted a myriad of competitive events in its history. Whether the first soccer match held on the Speedway is remembered remains to be seen.

IZOD IndyCar Series drivers Simona de Silvestro, Graham Rahal and Josef Newgarden joined Indiana University’s Eriq Zavaleta to take on MLS draft hopefuls Carlos Alvarez, Kyle Bekker, and Andrew Farrell on a field set up on the main straightaway of the famed 2.5-mile oval.

“I’ve been here to see races, but never seen soccer here, so it was an honor to be part of it,” said Zavaleta, a native of Westfield, Ind., who helped lead his team to the NCAA men’s national championship in 2012. “The drivers were great. I didn’t know what to expect from them but they did great. They showed they had some skill.” Read Full Article →

Occasionally, Dario Franchitti will ring up Sir Jackie Stewart for some perspective.

“Jackie, what do I do here?” Franchitti says. “He’ll give me some advice. He has such an unusual way of thinking about things sometimes.”

If possible, he would do the same with Jim Clark, the fellow Scot who won two Formula One World Championships and the 1965 Indianapolis 500 whom Franchitti holds in highest regard.

“Between (Clark) and Jackie, the guys I wanted to emulate, to drive like,” Franchitti says of his youth and appropriate to this day. “I don’t have their talent, so I try and work hard. I’m lucky I’m with a great team.”

IndyCarDario Franchitti slipped the wreath over his head and took a healthy sip of cool milk in the 91-degree mid-afternoon heat in Victory Circle at the Indianapolis Motor Speedway. First, however, he donned a pair of white cardboard sunglasses — a tribute to longtime friend, teammate, competitor and fellow Indianapolis 500 champion Dan Wheldon.

“Now my face on the Borg-Warner Trophy will be on either side of Dan’s,” Franchitti said of the 2011 race winner who died in October from injuries suffered in a racing accident.

Franchitti became the 10th driver with three or more 500 wins, holding off charges from Target Chip Ganassi Racing teammate Scott Dixon, Takuma Sato and Tony Kanaan over the final five laps following a restart.

2012 Indy 500 Pole Sitter Ryan Briscoe takes the Corvette ZR1 Pace Car for a ride around Indianapolis Motor Speedway.

IndyCarHearing the story of his father asking for a cold glass of buttermilk following his Indianapolis 500 victory in 1933 never gets old for Louis Meyer Jr. With the simple request, the first three-time winner of the 500 Mile Race established a tradition that will be played out again May 27 in Victory Circle.

Maybe it will be Josef Newgarden or one of the seven other rookies in the 33-driver field. Meyer, who attended the 38th Fastest Rookie of the Year luncheon May 22 at the Indianapolis Motor Speedway, wouldn’t be surprised given their accomplishments throughout the month.
