Chevrolet has won the 2012 GRAND-AM Rolex Series Engine Manufacturers’ Championship. Today’s win by SunTrust Racing in the season finale at Lime Rock Park capped the championship-winning effort by the five Corvette Daytona Prototype teams.

“Chevrolet is honored to have won the 2012 Engine Manufacturers’ Championship in the GRAND-AM Rolex Series,” said Jim Campbell, US Vice President Performance Vehicles and Motorsports. “This accomplishment, in the debut season of the Corvette Daytona Prototype, is the result of the dedication and hard work of our team owners, crews and drivers, along with that of our technical partners.”

Robin Liddell and John Edwards took the No. 57 Stevenson Motorsports Camaro GT.R to GRAND-AM Rolex Sports Car Series Grand Touring (GT) Victory Lane today in the Montreal 200 at Circuit Gilles Villeneuve, making it back-to-back wins for the team at the Montreal, Quebec, Canada track.

Starting from the pole, Edwards took the green flag and settled into a solid pace at the front of the GT class. After a smooth driver exchange, Liddell held the point comfortably despite losing radio contact with the team and resorting to old fashioned pit board communication for a brief period until he was able to restore the radio.

But in the closing laps, the second place car made a final charge for the win. However, in typical style, Liddell continued his smooth maneuvering around the 2.709-mile, 15-turn road course to the checkered flag, and win by .569 seconds. It is the second victory of the season for the No. 57 Stevenson Motorsports Camaro GT.R team, and the fourth career Montreal victory for Liddell.

Spirit of Daytona Captures Second Win of the Season and Fifth Consecutive Victory for Corvette DP in Rolex Sports Car Series Competition
Westbrook and Valiante Score Dominating Victory at Mid-Ohio

Richard Westbrook and Michael Valiante put the No. 90 Spirit of Daytona Corvette DP in victory lane at Mid-Ohio Sports Course in the EMCO Gears Classic for the GRAND-AM Rolex Sports Car Series. It is the second victory of the season for the Troy Flis-owned team to give Corvette DP its fifth consecutive win in the first six races of the 2012 season.

“Congratulations to the No. 90 Spirit of Daytona Corvette DP team on capturing their second win of the season,” said Jim Lutz, Chevrolet Grand-Am Program Manager. “Mid-Ohio didn’t disappoint in producing hard, competitive racing. Michael Valiante put the team in a great position near the front during his stint, and Richard Westbrook did a masterful job of holding off the competition in the final dash to the finish. It is testimony to the hard work by everyone involved in this program to again have two Corvette DPs on the podium with the No. 5 Action Express Racing Corvette DP finishing third.

Solid Start, Painful Finish for SunTrust at Belle Isle
Angelelli, Taylor Take Charge of Inaugural Detroit Street Race Just Short of Midpoint
Before Brush with Pit Road Wall Leads to DNF; Still in Good Shape in the Championship

The way the first half of Saturday’s two-hour Chevrolet GRAND-AM 200 Rolex Sports Car Series race was playing out, it looked like Max Angelelli and Ricky Taylor were well on their way to their third win in as many races and they were going to leave town with the series championship lead.

But, in the blink of an eye, the cold, hard reality of a mid-race brush with (more like an untimely smack against) the concrete wall at the exit of pit road managed to snatch away everything. It was a victory the No. 10 SunTrust Corvette Dallara DP team of Wayne Taylor Racing wanted so badly, in the shadows of General Motors headquarters just a few miles down Jefferson Avenue. But the midrace mishap sent the SunTrust team to the sidelines in stunning fashion just 39 laps into the 72-lap event with a 10th-place finish.

Chevrolet swept both classes in the Chevrolet Detroit Belle Isle GRAND-AM 200 on The Raceway at Belle Isle Park on Saturday: Darren Law and Joao Barbosa drove the No. 9 Action Express Racing Corvette Daytona Prototype to victory in the DP class, and Jordan Taylor and Paul Edwards won in the No. 88 Autohaus Motorsports Camaro GT.R in the GT category.

Law and Barbosa started fourth and finished 0.440 seconds ahead of their Action Express Racing teammates Terry Borcheller and David Donohue for their first victory of the season, and the fourth in five races this year for the Corvette DP.

“Sweeping both the Daytona Prototype and Grand Touring races at Belle Isle, in the shadow of its world headquarters, makes this a very special day for Chevrolet Racing,” said Jim Lutz, Chevrolet Grand-Am Program Manager. “Joao Barbosa and Darren Law both drove extremely well on a course that is not very forgiving, and they needed that effort in order to outpace their Action Express teammates, Terry Borcheller and David Donohue.”
