Proponents of green-white-checkered IZOD IndyCar Series events got just that July 22 in the Edmonton Indy – in the form of a caution-free race. On a temporary street circuit no less.

The previous full-course caution-free Indy car road/street race was at Portland in 2007 under Champ Car sanction. The last caution-free oval race was in June 2011 at Texas Motor Speedway.

“It’s strange. With all of the marbles we have out there, you’d expect someone to go off or spin or something,” said IZOD IndyCar Series championship points leader Ryan Hunter-Reay, who advanced four positions to finish seventh in the 75-lap battle on the 2.24-mile, 13-turn City Centre Airport course. “I was praying for a caution and it didn’t come.”

With two-thirds of the IZOD IndyCar Series season in the books, the Chevrolet IndyCar V-6 teams return to Canada for the second consecutive event to compete in the Edmonton Indy.

The Edmonton City Centre Airport 13-turn, 2.224-mile temporary street circuit is the site of the 11th race on the 15-race 2012 schedule. The flat course has long straightaways with tight corners, and sits at an altitude of almost 2,200 feet above sea level. The 2012 Edmonton Indy will be the eighth IndyCar race at Edmonton City Centre Airport. The race was held on a 1.973-mile temporary circuit from 2005-2010 and moved to a new 2.224-mile temporary circuit in 2011.

“Congratulations to Ryan Hunter-Reay and his Andretti Autosport team on winning their third consecutive race in Toronto,” said Chris Berube, Chevrolet Racing Program Manager for the IZOD IndyCar Series. “This weekend, Chevy returns to Canada to race on the Edmonton City Centre Airport temporary course. Like all temporary courses, Edmonton will present a unique set of challenges. The Chevrolet team engineers, working in conjunction with our technical partners, have been working on adapting to the altitude the cars will be operating in, which is nearly as high as Sao Paulo, Brazil. The altitude, coupled with the recently added push-to-pass feature, will increase the workload on the Chevrolet twin turbo V6 engine.

Performing in the clutch is a common characteristic of most champions. Despite the fact that this year’s World of Outlaws (WoO) Sprint Car Series champion won’t be decided until the first week of November, the outcomes of the next 16 races may go a long way toward establishing a frontrunner. Tony Stewart Racing’s (TSR) Steve Kinser and Donny Schatz are locked in a battle on top of the WoO standings, and both have had tremendous success in the past during Sprint car racing’s “Month of Money.” This year’s edition kicks off with the Brad Doty Classic Wednesday and ends with the 29th annual Kings Royal at Tony Stewart’s Eldora Speedway Saturday night.

The 2012 WoO season has been more competitive than ever with numerous winners of multiple events and changes at the top of the standings being a regular occurrence. Kinser leads the tour back into action Wednesday at Limaland Motorsports Park in Lima, Ohio, at the 24th annual Ohio Logistics Brad Doty Classic presented by Racing Optics. Kinser is one of only three drivers to win the Brad Doty Classic more than once, and he hopes to pilot the TSR No. 11 Bass Pro Shops/J.D. Byrider/Chevrolet Maxim to his third Classic triumph and fifth career victory at Limaland.

Ryan Hunter-Reay wins the 2012 Honda Indy Toronto. Charlie Kimball finishes 2nd and Mike Conway is 3rd.

Andretti Autosport principal Michael Andretti has sound advice for Ryan Hunter-Reay with five IZOD IndyCar Series races left.

“Don’t do anything different,” he said after joining Hunter-Reay in Victory Circle for the third consecutive race.

So maybe it’s not necessarily deep or inspiring, but it’s wise in its own right for the new championship leader. Hunter-Reay’s victory in the Honda Indy Toronto on July 8, combined with Will Power’s 15th place, vaulted the driver of the No. 28 Team DHL/Sun Drop Citrus Soda car into the front-runner’s spot by 34 points. It’s another 12 points back to Helio Castroneves in third.
