IndyCar Season finale at Auto Club Speedway expanded to 500 miles

INDYCAR announced today that the 2012 IZOD IndyCar Series schedule will remain at 15 races.

INDYCAR was exploring a potential replacement event after it announced June 13 that its inaugural race in China, scheduled for Aug. 19, had been canceled.

“After carefully considering all possible options for an additional race, we felt it was in our best interest to keep our schedule at its current 15-event lineup,” said Randy Bernard, CEO, INDYCAR. “We want to make sure that when we add events to our roster they have long-term potential and are given every opportunity to be successfully promoted. The more we explored, the more we felt like we were rushing what could be good, long-lasting opportunities for the sport.

The 3½-foot tall green ethanol pump trophy caught the attention of Ryan Hunter-Reay a few years ago at Iowa Speedway.

“I think it’s the coolest thing. It’s got a plug in the back and it lights up,” said the driver of the No. 28 Team DHL/Sun Drop Citrus Soda car, who late June 23 prevailed in the entertaining Iowa Corn Indy 250 on the .894-mile racetrack to become the first driver with consecutive oval victories since Helio Castroneves in 2010. “I’ve wanted that trophy for a long time.”

Nothing against the understated Milwaukee IndyFest first-place trophy, which tangibly represents Hunter-Reay’s and Andretti Autosport’s resurgence in a season with the new car-engine package, but his wife, Beccy, will be seeking that “perfect place for it” in their Fort Lauderdale, Fla., residence.

Ryan Hunter-Reay’s second consecutive short track victory was reason enough to celebrate. Closing to three points of IZOD IndyCar Series championship front-runner Will Power was a bonus.

Hunter-Reay, who prevailed at the Milwaukee Mile a week earlier following a 90-minute rain delay, won the Iowa Corn Indy 250 at Iowa Speedway under caution. The start was delayed 40 minutes because of a thunderstorm.

Hunter-Reay, driving the No. 28 Team DHL/Sun Drop Citrus Soda car, led Andretti Autosport teammate Marco Andretti by 1.2223 seconds on Lap 247 of 250 when the yellow flag flew the next lap for the No. 6 car driven by Katherine Legge making contact with the SAFER Barrier exiting Turn 2.

IndyCarDario Franchitti, who leaped into the top eight on the time chart in the final seconds of practice to qualify for the heat race, passed Marco Andretti on Lap 8 of 30 and went on the claim the pole for the 250-lap race under the lights June 23.

It was the second consecutive week that Franchitti has started on pole, and was the 28th of his Indy car career (passing Al Unser for seventh on the all-time list).

Results of the second practice session determined the fields for the 30-lap qualifying races. The top eight comprised Race 3, while Race 1 consisted of even-numbered positions in practice to determine the even-numbered spots in the starting lineup starting from 10th down. Race 3 followed the same format for odd-numbered cars.

Professor B aka. Jon Beekuis talks to us about the wheel nuts on the IZOD INDYCAR Series car.

IndyCarTony Kanaan opened the post-race news conference with his own question: “Can we race here again, that race that is missing?”

The runner-up to Ryan Hunter-Reay in the Milwaukee IndyFest Presented by XYQ would be among 25 IZOD IndyCar Series proponents to fill the gap in the August schedule created by the cancellation of the China race with a follow-up visit to the Milwaukee Mile.

That’s not under consideration, but it was announced just before the green flag that the historic venue will again play host to the series in June 2013. At least that’s something for Kanaan, who has finished no worse than fourth in six of his eight starts at the Mile. It was the best finish of the season for the 2004 IZOD IndyCar Series champion, who moved to eighth in the championship standings.

IndyCarPursuant to input from IZOD IndyCar Series drivers and team engineers, INDYCAR has directed a maximum rear flap angle of 37 degrees with no wicker allowed for the Iowa Corn Indy 250 on June 23 at Iowa Speedway.

The technical bulletin sent to teams June 18 follows two days of testing by 21 cars total at the .875-mile oval last week. The rule will reduce downforce available by about 8-9 percent.
