Franchitti’s experience, enthusiasm tough combination to beat

Occasionally, Dario Franchitti will ring up Sir Jackie Stewart for some perspective.

“Jackie, what do I do here?” Franchitti says. “He’ll give me some advice. He has such an unusual way of thinking about things sometimes.”

If possible, he would do the same with Jim Clark, the fellow Scot who won two Formula One World Championships and the 1965 Indianapolis 500 whom Franchitti holds in highest regard.

“Between (Clark) and Jackie, the guys I wanted to emulate, to drive like,” Franchitti says of his youth and appropriate to this day. “I don’t have their talent, so I try and work hard. I’m lucky I’m with a great team.”

Kasey Kahne Wins Sprint Cup Coca-Cola 600

Kasey Kahne continued his emphatic turnaround Sunday night at Charlotte Motor Speedway, handily winning the Coca-Cola 600 for the third time.

In his 300th NASCAR Sprint Cup start, Kahne posted his first victory of the season, his first since joining Hendrick Motorsports and the 13th of his career. The win was Kahne’s fourth at Charlotte.

Kahne beat runner-up Denny Hamlin to the finish line by 4.295 seconds. Kyle Busch ran third, followed by Greg Biffle, Brad Keselowski and Dale Earnhardt Jr., as nine cars finished on the lead lap at the 1.5-mile track.

DARIO FRANCHITTI CLAIMS THIRD INDIANAPOLIS 500 WIN IN HIGHLY COMPETITIVE RACE

IndyCarDario Franchitti slipped the wreath over his head and took a healthy sip of cool milk in the 91-degree mid-afternoon heat in Victory Circle at the Indianapolis Motor Speedway. First, however, he donned a pair of white cardboard sunglasses — a tribute to longtime friend, teammate, competitor and fellow Indianapolis 500 champion Dan Wheldon.

“Now my face on the Borg-Warner Trophy will be on either side of Dan’s,” Franchitti said of the 2011 race winner who died in October from injuries suffered in a racing accident.

Franchitti became the 10th driver with three or more 500 wins, holding off charges from Target Chip Ganassi Racing teammate Scott Dixon, Takuma Sato and Tony Kanaan over the final five laps following a restart.

Brad Keselowski wins Nationwide race at Charlotte Motor Speedway

Fuel miser Brad Keselowski got 73 laps out of his last tank of fuel and had enough left in the tank to outrun Denny Hamlin in Saturday’s History 300 NASCAR Nationwide Series race at Charlotte Motor Speedway and do a celebratory burnout afterward.

The victory was Keselowski’s first in the series this year and the 18th of his career. Hamlin crossed the finish line .838 seconds behind the 2010 Nationwide champion. Kyle Busch ran third, followed by Kevin Harvick and Elliott Sadler.

TARGET CHIP GANASSI RACING EARNS FIRST IZOD PIT STOP CHALLENGE WIN

IndyCarTarget Chip Ganassi Racing and driver Scott Dixon earned a long-awaited victory Friday, May 25 at the Indianapolis Motor Speedway, winning the IZOD Pit Stop Challenge for the first time in team history.

The Ganassi team and Dixon beat Panther/Dreyer & Reinbold Racing and Oriol Servia in the final, changing four tires, simulating refueling and entering and exiting the pit box in 13.769 seconds. Panther/Dreyer & Reinbold and Servia – also first-time finalists – trailed at 17.194.

Target Chip Ganassi Racing, which earned $50,000 for the victory, previously finished second three times in the IZOD Pit Stop Challenge.

Newgarden honored as fastest rookie at Indy

IndyCarHearing the story of his father asking for a cold glass of buttermilk following his Indianapolis 500 victory in 1933 never gets old for Louis Meyer Jr. With the simple request, the first three-time winner of the 500 Mile Race established a tradition that will be played out again May 27 in Victory Circle.

Maybe it will be Josef Newgarden or one of the seven other rookies in the 33-driver field. Meyer, who attended the 38th Fastest Rookie of the Year luncheon May 22 at the Indianapolis Motor Speedway, wouldn’t be surprised given their accomplishments throughout the month.
