IndyCarRyan Briscoe had two hours to mentally prepare himself to qualify for the 100th Anniversary Indianapolis 500 after crashing in practice on Pole Day 2011.

“That was very difficult to get back in the car and go out to qualify,” related the Team Penske driver, who started 26th.

On May 27, he’ll have a decidedly better view of the first turn.

Briscoe’s four-lap time of 2 minutes, 38.9514 seconds (average speed of 226.484 mph) in the 90-minute shootout for the top nine qualifiers bested the time of 2:38.9537 (226.481) posted by James Hinchcliffe to earn the pole position for the 96th Running of the 500 Mile Race.

More Sprint Cup Photos from Darlington Raceway

After months of frustration, Jimmie Johnson gave Rick Hendrick his 200th NASCAR Sprint Cup Series victory, running away from the rest of the field on a green-white-checkered-flag restart that took the Bojangles’ Southern 500 one lap past its scheduled distance.

On Saturday night at Darlington Raceway, Johnson ended his own winless streak of 16 races, a drought of relative epic proportions for the five-time champion. The victory was Johnson’s 56th, breaking a tie with Rusty Wallace for eighth on the all-time list.

Hamlin ran second, followed by Tony Stewart, Kyle Busch and Martin Truex Jr.

More Nationwide Photos from Darlington Raceway

For Joey Logano, Friday night’s victory in the VFW Sport Clips 200 Nationwide Series event at Darlington Raceway was tinged with regret.

Yes, Logano drove away from Joe Gibbs Racing teammate Denny Hamlin after a green-white-checkered-flag restart to win his second straight race in the series and third of the season.

But Logano got the opportunity for his 12th career victory only after a well-intentioned bump went awry and wrecked championship contender Elliott Sadler on a restart with five laps left in regulation distance.

“Obviously, this win was a little bittersweet — you don’t want to win ‘em that way,” said Logano, who called Sadler after the race to apologize and left a voice mail. “Your heart drops. You know he’s running for points.

PASS RacingPASS South Helps Track Celebrate 50 Consecutive Years of Racing

Charlotte, NC 5/8/12- After a one year hiatus from the series schedule the PASS South Series super late models return to the Wake County Speedway in Raleigh, North Carolina this Friday night May 11th for the Capital City Clash/Bull Ring Tough Guy Challenge 125 presented by Bio Specialists. The series will help the small quarter mile track celebrate its 50th consecutive year of racing with the biggest event that will hit the track in 2012. A full field of cars and packed grandstands are expected to greet racers and fans alike.

“You wouldn’t believe it but Wake County was the one track that fans and drivers made clear that they wanted back on the PASS South schedule in 2012.,” stated Pro All Stars Series president Tom Mayberry. “Every time we’ve raced there it’s been an action packed show with great enthusiasm from the crowd and I expect more of the same this year. This race I’ve always said it well separate the men from the boys.”

The tight racing that the Wake County Speedway provides puts sophisticated chassis setups and high horsepower motor combination in the backseat, and brings old fashioned driver talent to the forefront. Series veterans Preston Peltier, Jay Fogleman, and John Batten all have raced at the track and knows that patience is what gets you to the end of 125 lap feature not a fast racecar.
The top four drivers in the series standings are all drivers who have had fast racecars so far in 2012, but now the knowledge beneath the helmet is what will be tested the most. Hickory race winner Kyle Grissom, latest series winner Ross Kenseth, Landon Cling, and Brandon Ward will all be making their Wake County Speedway debuts.

A 2013 Chevrolet Corvette ZR1 will lead the starting field of the 96th Indianapolis 500 to the green flag Sunday, May 27 at the Indianapolis Motor Speedway. With 638 horsepower, the Corvette ZR1 is the most powerful production car ever to serve as the Pace Car during the Indianapolis 500.

This will be the 23rd time a Chevrolet has paced “The Greatest Spectacle in Racing” and the 11th time a Corvette is serving as the Pace Car, both event records. The 2013 model year will be historic for Corvette, marking its 60th anniversary and the final year of production for the current generation.

“Corvette embodies pure performance, so the ZR1 is a perfect car to pace the most prestigious auto race in the world,” said Jeff Belskus, Indianapolis Motor Speedway Corporation president and chief executive officer. “Chevrolet is a great partner of the Speedway, and we share in the excitement of the upcoming 60th anniversary of the iconic Corvette brand. It’s even more meaningful to see a Chevrolet pacing the field at Indy since Chevy has returned as an engine supplier for the IZOD IndyCar Series for the first time since 2005.”

IndyCarScott Dixon didn’t know what to expect upon arriving at Texas Motor Speedway for the first IZOD IndyCar Series Open Test on a 1.5-mile oval with the 2012 IZOD IndyCar Series chassis powered by the 2.2-liter, turbocharged engine supplied by Chevrolet, Honda and Lotus.

The 6½ hours of available track time, following Rubens Barrichello’s IZOD IndyCar Series oval rookie test, provided the 2008 Texas race winner with gigabytes of information to take into the June 8-9 Firestone 550. It also calmed concerns about the car’s safety on the high-banked racetrack, which is similar to Las Vegas Motor Speedway.

“For the first time coming here you’re open-minded as you try to figure out what the car’s going to be like, and until you get through the first couple of runs you’re not sure what to expect,” said Dixon, who’s fourth in the series’ championship standings after four road/street course races.
